| Kensington market an eclectic customer experience
I have avoided writing about Kensington market. Though well known for its cheap and original second-hand finds, Kensington has seemed to me, paradoxically, to be a rather predictable style experience. In fact, if I open one more weekly publication and see yet another Toronto style maven who has purchased parts of his or her outfit from a little shop in Kensington, I think the vintage vamp in me may explode. But since Im a passionate used clothes horse — one who would never dissuade anyone from buying gently used over new — and because I wanted to honour Earth Day on April 22 and pay homage to those who reduce their ecological footprint by buying used clothing, I decided to write about Kensington. The first shop I check out is on my must-visit list, and it doesnt disappoint.
New York: The Bowery Hotel
The Bowery is no stranger to hotels, except, of course, they were called flophouses. For several bucks, you once got a wooden cell with a bug-infested bed, bare bulb and chicken wire ceiling. So it's no surprise that some New Yorkers find the opulent 17-story Bowery Hotel a bit galling. The latest venture from Eric Goode and Sean MacPherson, who created the Maritime Hotel and numerous botes, the hotel evokes the Gilded Age of red waistcoats, hand-set bricks and wood-paneled elevators. And the views from the upper floors are positively grand. So what if you might have to step over a few vestigial bums to get there? THE LOCATION Depends on your perspective. It's either next door to a drug rehab center, a men's shelter and a Salvation Army shelter. Or it's near the shuttered CBGB, a rash of shiny condos and a fashionably seedy corridor between the East Village and NoHo.
