Lamps relishing tight title tussle
LONDON: Chelsea might be struggling to hang on to Manchester Uniteds coat-tails in the final stages of the season, but Frank Lampard insists he is relishing the closest Premiership title battle in years. Even if it ultimately means he misses out on a third consecutive championship medal, the Blues England midfielder believes the competition offered by a revitalised United is a good thing for the English game. United will entertain Middlesbrough today looking to extend their lead over their London rivals to six points ahead of Chelseas trip to Newcastle tomorrow. With only five matches left for each of the top two, a single slip-up by either side could prove decisive and Lampard is happy to be at the heart of the nerve-shredding battle. .
Madrid 'to read' under stars
Madrid - Poems will hang from street lamps and bookstores will stay open until the wee hours next week as the Madrid region celebrates International Book Day, organisers said on Monday. More than 600 writers, musicians and artists will join in next Monday's festivities, which feature 350 events such as round-table discussions, lectures and poetry readings, said Santiago Fisas, cultural affairs director for the Madrid regional government. Public libraries and a total of 120 bookstores across the region will extend their hours to bring readers and authors together. Spanish poet Antonio Gamoneda, recipient of the 2006 Cervantes Prize, the Spanish-speaking world's highest literary honour, will meet with high school and university students. Fuencarral Street in downtown Madrid will be decked out with hanging books of poetry so pedestrians are surrounded by verse, Fisas said.
Don't wait for a fatality: Crack down on fire safety
When you're trying to sleep, do homework, or just relax, fire alarms become an annoyance. I mean, nothing ever happens, right? So imagine my surprise when I opened my door Monday night and got a face full of smoke. Five minutes later, I was standing outside Rodgers with every other resident there, wondering what had just happened. According to The BG News, what happened was that someone on my floor had put a warm lava lamp in their closet, covering it with clothes to hide it. Apparently, they were concerned they weren't supposed to have the lava lamp in their room, but I was left wondering why it was there in the first place. Didn't students know the dangers of having fire hazards in their rooms? The answers should be yes, but because it's so easy to forget or hide fire hazards, it doesn't matter.
