Questions and answers on the Waste Electrical and Electronic ...

Read up on some frequently asked questions regarding the WEEE Directive and how it affects you. Answers provided by Ernest Magog, Chief Executive of Lumicom and Eddie Taylor, Chief Executive of Recolight.

As a buyer or specifier, what are my obligations under the WEEE Regulations?
None! For the good of the industry and the sustainability of our environment the lighting industry would strongly recommend and urge you to buy or specify lighting equipment (lamps and luminaires) from a producer (supplier) who can demonstrate that they are registered with an approved WEEE Compliance Scheme (preferably Recolight for Lamps and Lumicom for Luminaires). By doing so, you can be assured that at the end of the products life, it will not be wastefully disposed of to landfill or with other debris. As a valuable resource, it will be converted into the basic raw materials of ferrous, non-ferrous, glass and plastic and will be re-used in manufacturing. One way of demonstrating your support of the WEEE legislation would be to add something along the lines of the following on your specifications:

The producers of the lamps and luminaires to be installed, must be members of a WEEE Compliance Scheme approved by and registered with the Environment Agency.

Lights may improve road's safety

A township redevelopment project will add lights to a stretch of road that has been the site of five pedestrian deaths within the last decade.

The 15-acre project will bring street lamps to an area of Route 130 that was known as Motel Row. The motels there were demolished and the land will be developed into age-restricted condominiums.

Since 1996, five people have been killed on 130 from Highland Avenue to Riverton Road, according to Cinnaminson police. Also, 38 accidents with 18 injuries occurred in the area, according to state Department of Transportation's preliminary numbers for last year.

While the street lamps will help illuminate the area, township officials said the deaths were primarily caused by lack of caution along the six-lane, north-south highway that serves as a major artery running from Trenton through Gloucester County.

West Delhi leads the way in consumption of environment-friendly ...

NEW DELHI: Energy and environment-conscious residents of West Delhi have stolen a march over their counterparts in the rest of the Capital by becoming the largest consumers of Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFL). With both environmentalists and the State Power Department pushing for phasing out the energy-guzzling incandescent bulbs, consumers are being sensitised about the merits of opting for the CFLs that save a great deal of energy and also protect the environment. Data collated by BSES power distribution company show that 1.32 lakh customers have opted for the energy-saving CFLs in West Delhi, followed by 1.13 lakh in South Delhi. East Delhi and Central Delhi are at the third and fourth spot with over 89,000 and 18,000 CFLs being bought respectively. The survey also indicates that the 15-watt CFL, which is equivalent to the 75-watt incandescent bulb, is most popular among customers.
