| Lady of the lamp
She may not have had the powers of the genie in Aladdin's lamp, but the "dancing" lady in Elizabeth Gerner's hanging lamp was certainly magical to Gerner's grandson. When he was 5, the boy would sit mesmerized as oil flowed through thin tubes surrounding the lady in the lamp to give the impression that she was dancing. Gerner's grandson, now 19, may no longer carry a torch for the lady, but the lamp is still a fixture in her Albertson living room. Gerner, 78 and a retired elementary school secretary, recently shed some light on the lamp with Newsday writer Daniel Bubbeo:

I found The Secret
In case you did not know, there is a secret to the universe. Lucky for our generation, it has been condensed into an hour-and-a-half long DVD aptly titled, "The Secret" - it has cool graphics. I know, I know: "I don't have 90 minutes to spare in this fast-paced world" you say. Well just for you, I'll condense it down to a 600-word column. The secret of life is the law of attraction. By using this natural rule, one is said to be able to receive anything and everything he or she desires. The video used the story of Aladdin and his magic lamp to explain.
The original story goes that Aladdin finds a magic lamp, rubs it and a genie appears who grants him infinite wishes. Anything he wanted, he received. The Secret states that any human has the power to get everything, like Aladdin, by simply asking the Universe through the vehicle of brain impulses.

The summit is the first major international conference focusing on business and the environment in Asia. The event aims to highlight the environmental challenges facing global business today and share strategies and best practice for corporate environmental responsibility. The event will culminate an almost year-long project begun by the City of Bartow and the Florida State Department of Land and Water Conservation. Bartow community members, civic clubs, Bartow and Summerlin High School Alumni and other organizations donated funds to provide a gateway, tables, benches, trash receptacles, street lamps, irrigation, landscaping and signage. The Rotary Clubs of Bartow donated a six-sided steel gazebo near the water to commemorate Rotary International's 100th anniversary. Polk County School Board has completed basketball courts and is completing soccer fields around the park, which is located just east of Bartow High School. There are plans to link Summerlin Park with Nye Jordan Park, located at the corner of Orange Avenue and Stuart Street, and Mary Holland Park, just south of Clower Street at the end of Broadway Avenue.
