Lighting work gets fast-tracked by LBCC board
Due to their potential as health hazards, the Linn-Benton Community College board of education Wednesday evening evening approved fast tracking the bidding process to replace several light fixtures on campus that contain metal halide lamps.A report prepared for the board by college vice president Mike Holland, noted that the "metal halide bulbs give out bright, white light. However, a broken high-intensity light bulb of the type used in the gym and exterior walkways on campus are potential sources of ultraviolet radiation. An outer glass envelope normally prevents the release of UV rays. But if it's broken, the inner quartz tube keeps on burning. Exposure to a broken metal halide bulb can burn the corneas." The bulbs are located primarily in Takena Hall, the gymnasium, outside corridors and parking lots.

LB Opera brings 'Anne Frank' to life in a bleak parking garage
THE BIGGEST news about Long Beach Opera's current production of Grigori Frid's opera "Anne Frank" is that it is being sung in parking garages. The company gave the first two performances of the opera Tuesday and Thursday in the parking structure at Sinai Temple in Westwood. On Saturday the work will be performed in the Lincoln Park Parking Garage in Long Beach. And as is often the case, the biggest news is not the most important. The garage locale, an idea of LBO's Artistic Director Andreas Mitisek (he wanted to find a venue that suggested the disorientation Anne Frank must have felt hiding in a warehouse annex for two years) is only a small part of the opera's wonderful, almost eerie beauty and its powerful, human message.
