Want to control global warming? Say no to the bulb

Pune, April 16: If you thought aerosols and deforestation are the only factors that cause global warming, you may want to re-think on that. The ordinary light bulb in your home is also a contributor, points out environmental organisation Greenpeace that has launched a nationwide campaign to Ban the Bulb as part of their larger initiative for energy efficiency.

The aim is to encourage consumers to switch to energy efficient Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFL) instead of ordinary incandescent light bulbs.

Modi, Nitish Concerned about Bihar's Future

Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi, in his speech on the first day of the two-day Thakur Prasad Memorial lecture in Patna on Sunday, expressed his concerns over the condition of Bihar saying it neither had a port nor oil resources like some other states and his main concerns remained how to bridge this vast gap between Bihar and other developed states.

Modi who just returned from a visit to Gujarat to get an insight into the reasons for its astounding economic success, said Bihar following its division in 2000, was not left with much natural resources and though the state was exploring various ideas to achieve economic freedom, the process was tough and time-consuming.

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who followed Modi at the lecture podium, was more upbeat, and said what Bihar needed was inspiration and encouragement.

HOT STUFF WEST BAY

The popularity of the Smithsonian Institution and its collection of artifacts of American history is behind a new collection by Kichler Lighting.

The Smithsonian Collection features three designs based on bits and pieces of old lighting fixtures and one patent sample found in the institution's archives.

The Renwick (bathroom fixture shown at top; $297) is drawn from a piece of glass from an old torchere in the original Smithsonian Institution building's main hall. Architect James Renwick designed the red-brick building on the Washington Mall, known as the Castle.

The Victorian glass globes shaped like flowers that are in the Joseph Henry line (pendant shown at right; $165) were inspired by old gas lanterns that adorned an upstairs hallway in the Castle.

The Titus (shown at lower left; $645) is a line of three-sided outdoor lamps that evoke old candle lamps.

Dead piglets kept warm by heat lamps before blaze

Three piglets that died in a Severn Township house fire Tuesday were being kept warm in the basement under heat lamps, fire chief Eric Dowell said Wednesday.

Dowell said he didnt believe the trio were being kept as pets at the Brennan Line farmhouse, pointing out mature pigs are kept in the barn at the hobby farm.

Though the newborns perished in the smoky blaze, the two-storey homes only female occupant most likely averted a greater catastrophe thanks to a smoke alarm, Dowell added. .

Hope for gas lights is fading due to vandals

Bournemouth's last surviving gas lamps could be lost to future generations following a spate of attacks by vandals.

In a desperate bid to save the atmospheric lamps, which still light up parts of Throop and Holdenhurst, one concerned civic leader is calling on residents to be vigilant.

"Someone must have seen those responsible," ward councillor Ron Whittaker said. "This is deliberate vandalism. There have been endless attacks to gas lamp heads in Throop and repairing them is causing considerable cost to the local authority.
