Drug Bust Yields Marijuana & Mushrooms

Police in Hokah, Minnesota raided a drug house and found sixty marijuana plants, psychedelic mushrooms and growing materials.27-year-old Matthew Sheehan from Hokah is charged with six counts of selling and possessing drugs. Investigators searched Sheehan's home Thursday and found the drugs, heat lamps, potting soil, fertilizers, a safe with cash and other drug-dealing supplies. Investigators say he lives just 300 feet away from an elementary school and city park. He faces several years in prison and thousands of dollars in fines.

C.W. Wasson, retiring Civil Works Administration supervisor for this county, issued a report today showing that slightly more than $136,000 was spent by the CWA in Independence County during the agency’s activities. Twenty-four percent was spent for materials, and about $94,000 was spent for labor. These figures do not include the women’s division, which included about $12,000, of which $10,000 was for labor.

The first case to go to the jury in circuit court today was in the trial of Clay Ware charged in connection with the alleged theft of 20 bushels of corn from Desha Lester and Robert Shelpman. The jury changed the charge to petit larceny, and Ware was fined $10 and sentenced to one minute in jail.

Dead piglets under heat lamp: fire chief

Three piglets that died in a Severn Township house fire Tuesday were being kept warm in the basement under heat lamps, fire Chief Eric Dowell said yesterday.

Dowell said he does not believe the animals were being kept as pets at the Brennan Line farmhouse, pointing out mature pigs are kept in the barn at the hobby farm. .
