KOLKATA: Philips Electronics India (PEIL) has decided to build an undisclosed war chest to fund acquisitions in the lifestyle and healthcare segments. In the immediate term, the company has Rs 697 crore reserves in its books and is likely to use a portion to finance acquisitions. Addressing shareholders at the company's 77th annual general meeting on Thursday, PEIL chairman SM Datta said: "We are developing a war chest for acquisitions in coming years. In calendar 2007, we have planned a Rs 50-crore capex for our existing units." Elaborating on the company's acquisition plans, Mr K Ramachandran, vice-chairman and MD, told newspersons: "We are working on a new business development plan till 2010. The new areas identified by PEIL are lifestyle and healthcare, for which we will opt for the acquisition route.
Nigeria provides 250000 rechargeable lamps for April elections
Nigeria's Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) are to deliver 250,000 rechargeable lamps for this month's elections. An INEC official said the lamps to be delivered to polling centers are for use in case that the voting was conducted at night. The INEC's National Commissioner in charge of publicity Phillip Umeadi said on Saturday the lamps, which were supplied two weeks ago to the INEC by a contractor, were being kept in the commission's central store and logistics center in the Central Business District of Abuja. He said there were concerns that voting and the collation of results might encounter power shortage and last till deep night in polling centers. "If such things happen, we will use the lamps to illuminate the polling centers so that the exercise can go on unhindered.

What I meant to say was that you tend to get obsessed with things that you wouldn't have time to worry about at the office. Like how my Internet service provider has started sticking stupid little advertisements on the bottom of every e-mail I send. It's jarring to write a heartfelt e-mail to a friend in a crisis and realize that, at the bottom, Big Brother has added "Want to learn how to send mail for free AND get videos from across the web?" Pretty soon, they'll be selling the space to that creepy widow in the unpronounceable country who wants to split her dead husband's vast oil well fortune with me. Just yesterday, I was telling filing cabinet that I'm going to fight back. After all, they could put ANYTHING at the end of my e-mail ("Republicans Rock!") and I have no control.
