Beyond an unassuming exterior, a treasure of woodwork that ...

QUINCY -- Like an unadorned jewelry box that offers no hint of the treasures within, this squat bungalow presents a beguilingly simple exterior.

But take a peek inside and prepare to be dazzled. The stained glass windows, the fireplaces, even the radiator covers -- mahogany and marble -- are striking, but it's the woodwork that is incomparable. Intricately carved corbels reminiscent of a ship's figurehead and hand-carved wainscot panels embellish several rooms.

"It's pretty spectacular," said Tiffany Kelly, sales coordinator for The Quantum Group/Daisher-Chiles Cos. , which renovated and is selling the house. Neighbors told her that the original owner, a financier, salvaged woodwork from banks as they failed in the 1920s.

A den features the most impressive woodwork, including matching female figures with lamps atop their heads, young boys carved into either side of the massive fireplace, hunting scenes with a wolf's head, boar's head, fish and fowl, and a series of motifs such as musical instruments and a cornucopia encircling the room.

They are two guys who can't keep their names off the police blotters. Those are just names until you see the faces, and nobody should feel good about the front sports page of USA Today the other day. Photos of about 40 NFL players who have run afoul of the law were run and all but two were black.

Either you admit there are crimes or you don't.

Either you blame it on society or you don't.

Either you admit there are unwanted teenage pregnancies or you turn your back on it.

Either you take responsibility or play the victim card.

I'm all ears for a solution.

Grambling coach Eddie Robinson, who died last week, did more to promote the equality of black football players than any other man. He didn't do it overnight.

The drug farm

POLICE seized up to 10,000 cannabis plants after discovering a semi-detached house in a quiet Whitefield cul-de-sac had been transformed into a thriving drugs factory.

Officers stumbled across the giant cannabis farm at the three-bedroom property in Woodlands Avenue, at around 6.30pm on Tuesday. They had been responding to reports of a possible burglary.

Inside the house, police found the large number of cannabis plants being cultivated. They also discovered a substantial amount of electrical equipment, believed to be lamps, which generate a significant amount of heat critical to the cultivation process.

Now dimmer switches can be progammable

Nothing probably jolts you awake faster than bright lights on sleepy eyes. Whether you're groping the hallway wall on the way to the bathroom or just flipping the switch after a romantic movie, the abrupt, blinding light can leave you squinting painfully until your eyes adjust.

Replacing conventional light switches with dimmers can help you avoid those moments. However, dimmer switches won't work with all light bulbs.

Dimmer switches are available in several styles. The least expensive ones are dial-shaped knobs. They cost around $1.75. With knobs, "you have to adjust the light [level] every time you turn it on," says Doug Beach, the store manager at Lamps Plus in Fresno, Calif. "You also have to click it off to be sure the lights are off."

There also are dimmers that look like standard light switches.
