ASBO for Turf Moor car crook

POSTERS of a prolific criminal are being put up around Turf Moor to stop him breaking into cars on match days.

Police say the posters of Sean Nerney will be put up around Burnley Football Club's ground for every home day match to let football fans know of the 28-year-old's anti-social behaviour order (ASBO).

Nerney, a convicted thief from Hobart Street, Burnley, was issued with the ASBO to help reduce and prevent car crime in the borough and around the ground.

If he breaches the order, which lasts until February 2009, he could face a five-year jail sentence.

Police are hoping that raising awareness of the ASBO conditions will enable football supporters to help them to enforce the order.

Inspector Damian Darcy from Burnley Police said: "The ASBO was secured to help prevent offences of car crime around Burnley FC so it is entirely appropriate that we make sure people in that vicinity are aware of it.

Peter’s passion for model fun

Peter Bateson chuckles to himself when he sees people admiring his model trains. “They are made from pet food tins and the wheels are the lids off fish paste jars," he says.

“I made the GWR Dudley Castle locomotive and LMS Royal Scot around 20 years ago. “They were entered into Sutton Coldfield's Model Railway Society's exhibition at Fort Dunlop in March 1987 where they won the chairman's prize.

“It took me two years to make them but now no-one ever sees them. For a while I had them on the top of the dresser at home, but they were just collecting dust."

Over the years, Peter, 72, from Sedgley has made a medieval castle, a pirate ship, Noah's ark, a circus truck, a zoo, a Gloster Gladiator aeroplane, a Bugatti racing car, a lighthouse, a gipsy caravan, Elvis's Graceland, the Queen Mary and a 1909 Rolls Royce.

Uganda: Poor Fishing Method Threatens Nile Perch Survival

Controversy has arisen between fishermen, fish activists and researchers over a fishing method commonly called light fishing, for catching mukene (neobola bradior) from shared fishing grounds. The Nile perch fishermen say using the method, which uses light from pressure lamps, some fishermen trap a lot of mukene, which is food for the Nile Perch. And so the Nile perch is robbed of a balanced diet and consequently dies.

Mumbai faces power shortages

MUMBAI–Businesses in India's financial capital, Mumbai, are being asked to keep down air-conditioning use, change light bulbs and put computers on sleep mode in a drive to conserve energy and prevent severe power shortages.

Power supplier Tata Power Co. Ltd. said the city, which aspires to be a global financial hub and normally enjoys uninterrupted electricity, face potential power cuts as demand peaks in April and May – the hottest months in the Mumbai calendar.

Demand for power has risen with shopping malls, cinemas and new luxury apartments springing up across the city, reflecting an economic boom that encourages spending on everything from refrigerators to plasma televisions.

In a letter sent to businesses this week, Tata Power Co. urged office workers not to use electricity at peak times, switch the air conditioning later in the day and replace incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent lamps.

Travails of travel make being home a pleasure

We just got back from spending two weeks in Southern California -- San Diego for five days and Los Angeles for the remainder. In San Diego, we depended on travel guides and brochures for our decisions of what to do. We enjoyed the weather and the compact nature of the city. Public transportation and taxis are easy to use and inexpensive, so it made traveling to Old Town, Balboa Park and the Gas Lamp district pleasant and stress-free.From San Diego we took a train to L.A. to attend an Elderhostel about the art collections and great museums of the Los Angeles area. One of our early thoughts was to take the Amtrak train from Kelso to San Diego and then go by air back to LA and home. The cost was more than we wanted to spend, however, and 30 hours on a train seemed excessive. Instead, we took the train from San Diego to L.A.
