This Earth Day, the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection is urging residents to take action to help prevent climate change. Here are 10 things everyone can do to help protect the planet from global warming: Recycle as much waste as possible. Avoid products with excessive packaging it could spare the planet 1,200 pounds of carbon dioxide per year.
Drive less. Walk, ride your bike, carpool with a friend or take mass transit whenever possible.
Vacation closer to home it cuts down on fuel emissions.
Change a light bulb. Replace regular incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent lamps. The latter bulbs use 60 percent less energy and last 10 times longer.
To decorate a room, start with one really cool thing
To make a room personal, start with something you love: a painting, a photograph, a rug, a shell, a pillow, a glass jar, a quilt, anything. I was talking to a friend the other day who was despairing that she couldn't decorate her apartment. I asked her what she had that she really loved. It turns out there was a sofa her husband had refinished himself, a hutch they had found in an antiques store, a beautiful green marble tabletop in the attic at her mother's and lots of family pictures. Within minutes we had sketched out a way to rearrange her whole apartment to feature these cherished things and build around them. I'm a big believer in high-low. Expensive and cheap. It is worth spending some money on one nice piece that you can showcase and really cherish. Then you can augment that with flea market used furniture, and it looks as though you have eclectic taste.

Like all theater costume designers, Luke Brown always has an eye out for clothing and items that help create reality on a stage.
When shopping to help set a play, the first-year Yale Drama School student scours shops and attics for the "clothing that best fits the personality" of the characters. On occasion, he comes across other treasures - the a 1960s-era tie, a vintage Lacoste sweater, a pair of Vans sneakers - that he buys for their nearly unique appeal. For example, when Brown returned last winter from a visit to his hometown in Idaho he brought back five vintage cowboy shirts he'd found in antique shops.

Bravery award officer suffered racist abuse
A BLACK police officer who won a bravery award for breaking up a domestic argument in which he was racially abused suffered a repeat of the incident. Barrow police's PC Anthony Johnson was commended in 2005, but was last month subjected to another racial attack. Furness Magistrates' Court heard on Monday how Lee James Almond, 20, verbally harassed the constable when he was called to the scene of a domestic row on Orion Terrace, Barrow. Witnesses reported seeing Almond punching a lamp post and hearing him swear loudly after rowing with his girlfriend on March 24. But when PC Johnson intervened, Almond, of Wensum Lea, Walney, said: “Are you going to arrest me for punching a f***ing street light? “Get a white officer here to arrest me — you can't arrest me." In a statement read to the court, PC Johnson said: “I feel offended by what was said.
