Energy-saving lamps light up railway tracks

A total of 20,000 LED (light-emitting diode) street lamps will be installed along the railway track between Shanghai and its neighboring city Suzhou, a move which will cut the energy consumption in half.

The first batch of 100 lamps has passed trial tests conducted by the No.24 China Railway Group Co Ltd whichplans to upgrade the number of lamps on the railway track from 15,000 to 20,000. The new lamps have a longer life and perform perfectly in energy-saving.

A conservation report says if all the bulbs and fluorescent lamps were replaced by LED lamps in Shanghai, it might save the city power equal to the yearly energy output of the Three Gorges project.

The Shanghai branch of the No.24 China Railway Group Co Ltd has signed a cooperation agreement with the Taiwan-based Formosa Epitaxy Co and Hong Kong-based Wai Chi Electronics Ltd to supply the energy-saving project.

The legend of Soaphenge

SOAP LAKE -- Brent Blake towers over the ancient and mysterious structure, looking for the Neanderthal throwing a rock.

It's the only plastic figure performing the action. When Blake finds it, he places it atop one of the soap bars which comprise the mysterious Soaphenge, a tourist attraction whose origins are shrouded in mystery and lost to the history books ...Actually, the concept is one Blake came up with several years ago, shortly after the idea to locate a giant lava lamp in Soap Lake first occurred to him.Blake built a model using Lava soap to correspond with the lava flows of the region and including the Neanderthal figurines to simulate ancient peoples fighting over territorial issues.

One fired-up Back Alley Show

Do you remember that scene in The Smashing Pumpkins' video for 1979, where they're all in the living room of that house and the band is rocking it up with a crowd of partiers tightly scrunched in around them?

Picture that, except without any windows and much, much smaller, with a band that's, well, not quite as loud as The Smashing Pumpkins and not in a house, but in the back of Charlottetown's best used record store.

Now picture Richard Simmons running around in that room with an ice-cream cake on his head. No particular reason, actually. I just wanted you to picture Richard Simmons running around with an ice-cream cake on his head.

But picture everything else, minus Simmons, and you've got the scene last Saturday evening at Back Alley Music in Charlottetown.

LAMPS WAS DROPPED

FRANK LAMPARD was AXED from last night's England clash with Andorra - and then tried to fly straight home to London.

Chelsea midfielder Lampard suffered a broken wrist in training on Monday, but was given the all clear by the England medical team to play after training fully on Tuesday with a protective cast on the injury.

Lampard was desperate to start England's Euro 2008 qualifier with minnows Andorra but England boss Steve McClaren broke the news of his axing to him before breakfast yesterday.
