The popularity of the Smithsonian Institution and its collection of artifacts of American history is behind a new collection by Kichler Lighting. The Smithsonian Collection features three designs based on bits and pieces of old lighting fixtures and one patent sample found in the institution's archives. The Renwick (bathroom fixture shown at top; $297) is drawn from a piece of glass from an old torchere in the original Smithsonian Institution building's main hall. Architect James Renwick designed the red-brick building on the Washington Mall, known as the Castle. The Victorian glass globes shaped like flowers that are in the Joseph Henry line (pendant shown at right; $165) were inspired by old gas lanterns that adorned an upstairs hallway in the Castle. The Titus (shown at lower left; $645) is a line of three-sided outdoor lamps that evoke old candle lamps.
Childproofing your home
Tisha Hughes remembered the "defining moment" when she knew it was time to step up childproofing her home to protect her 10-month-old son, Cameron. Cameron, a proficient crawler who's mastered the art of pulling himself up to stand while holding onto furniture, was puttering around the dining room one day when he decided to use a chair to help him stand. "When he pulled up on the chair, it fell backward and hit him on the forehead," she recalled. Fortunately, Cameron wasn't injured. But his mother was "pretty freaked out" by the incident. Soon after, the Hugheses had a big garage sale. Many of the decorative items in their Modesto home - including tablecloths, sconces, candles, floor lamps and a curio cabinet filled with commemorate shot glasses - were now seen as potential hazards for Cameron, so out they went.
Recycling, geek style
In today's world with smog and the ever growing population we are becoming a little more conscious about the amount of waste we put into the world. We don't always do something about it, but we at least know it's a good idea to recycle. Why not recycle your old geeky gadgets, for example, your circuit board? The Circuit Breaker Circuit Board Floor Lamp offers exactly that, a lamp with old recycled circuit boards. Hey, why not be a little geeky about your recycling methods? However, there is a catch, as with all good things it comes at a price, $900 to be exact. Yes, you did read correctly; a lamp made of recycled goods is priced at $900. This is yet another one of those items that was a good idea but they took it a bit too far (about $800 too far). Luckily it's a fairly basic design and if you have the right friends it would be really simple to make for less than half the price.

Zetex Semiconductors, a leading analog signal processing and power management solution provider, has introduced the first low side self-protecting MOSFETs in a SOT223 package to provide diagnostic feedback via a separate status pin. The facility aims to further increase the reliability of high voltage automotive and industrial systems. The latest additions to the IntelliFET product range, the ZXMS6002G and ZXMS6003G are 60V, 500m rated N-channel devices particularly well suited to switching loads subject to high in-rush currents, such as lamps, motors and solenoids. Providing protection against over-temperature, over-current and over-voltage fault conditions, the ZXMS6002G provides analog indication of normal, current limiting and thermal shutdown modes without the need for additional external components.
