Slow start for Nigerian elections

Landmark Nigerian presidential polls have begun shakily after problems in getting recently printed ballot papers to the 120,000 polling stations.

Voting failed to begin as scheduled in much of the country, even though the start was delayed by two hours.

Printing issues meant voting papers for the landmark poll did not arrive from South Africa until Friday evening.

An overnight attack on election HQ in Abuja failed when a petrol tanker laden with detonators failed to explode.

The election should result in the first transfer of power between civilian presidents since independence - but BBC reporters across the country are reporting numerous problems.

Voting began on time in some parts of Katsina, home of two of the main presidential candidates, but near an election office youths burnt down several shacks, expressing frustration and anger at problems in getting election materials there.

Cat starts killer blaze in Manila slum area

MANILA: Two children were killed yesterday in a fire that started when a cat knocked down a gas lamp in a slum area in the Philippines, fire officials said.
The pre-dawn blaze also destroyed some 400 shanties in the fishing port of Navotas town in metropolitan Manila, leaving at least 3,000 people homeless.
Fire officials said the victims were brothers aged four and two. They said initial investigation showed that the fire started from the victims' house, where a cat knocked down a gas lamp, triggering the blaze.
The fire quickly spread through the shanty town before it was put out more than six hours later.
Hours after the fire, residents were sifting through the smouldering ashes to salvage whatever they could from the ruins.
At least 400 homes made of scrap sheet iron, plywood, plastic and cardboard were destroyed.

Buick Lucerne comes equipped with new safety tech

You don't need no stinkin' Volvo to experience BLIS(s) -- for 2008, the Buick Lucerne is fitted with lane departure and blind-spot warning systems. The Lucerne offers classic GM big-sedan ethos, with lots of content, wide, cushy seats and restrained, handsome styling. Now, when you're motorvating down the interstate, listening to your Buick 8, an amber lamp will illuminate in the gauge cluster, and a chime will toll three times to indicate you're about to encroach on someone else's road space. If one of the ever present morons on the road decides to hang out in your blind spot, the Lucerne uses proximity sensors behind the rear fascia to detect the car and warn you with an indicator in the side mirror. Buick's safety gear will also be offered on Cadillac's STS and DTS, making GM Luxury that much safer.
