Campus safety: the new reality

See that a frater seeks out someone--his big brother, a teacher, a longtime adult friend, someone at home, an alumnus. Offer to go with him if he is willing.

Make sure your fraternity orientation and the school's dorm and freshman orientations discuss in detail how to act in times of crisis, where to get help, how to evacuate and how to communicate. Does the campus have a unified warning system? Does your chapter president and/or advisor have a list of all e-mail addresses and phone numbers, as a warning/notification network?

Invite local law enforcement and/or counseling professionals to the house early on, to aid individuals, create links and help; develop a crisis situation plan before it is needed.

Keep a list or rack full of literature in the house, covering law enforcement/emergencies, suicide hotlines, alcohol, drug and abuse counselors, spiritual leaders, mental health agencies--addresses and phone numbers of anyone on or off campus who can help.

Marijuana growing operation uncovered

TROY-The Walworth County Drug Unit uncovered a large marijuana growing operation at N8833 Pickeral Lake Road earlier this month.

Police recovered seven marijuana root balls and evidence of a "sophisticated" growing operation that probably produced dozens of marijuana plants prior to the April 4 search, Drug Unit Sgt. Jeff Patek said.

"More plants were grown there at one time," Patek said. "Between the number of pots, lights and size of the rooms, it would indicate a larger grow than the seven plants."

Other items recovered included more than 50 buckets, hoses, heating lamps, fertilizers, potting trays and power cords, all evidence of a growing operation, Patek said.

Patek suspects the marijuana was grown at the vacant residence since November.

2007 Toyota Camry XLE V6 Review

This new Toyota Camry is a nice car all around. The sixth generation of this front-wheel-drive, white-bread sedan, best-seller for most of the past decade at around 400,000 units/year, is keeping Toyota ahead of the curve when it comes to both content and design. In terms of style, I don't think "white-bread" quite applies any more.

Styling of the Camry, until the current generation, has been almost painfully plain. But look at this one. The rear view hints at a Bangle-Butt BMW. The front swoops and sways with fresh shapes accentuating the large Toyota logo at the tip of its nose. Both headlights and taillights slope like eyebrows in a smile. I know styling is rather subjective, but in my considered view this is a vast improvement. The Toyota marketing department must be pleased in that the most important reason buyers turned away from the last generation Camry was uninspired styling.

HP Scanjet G4050

Home scanners have shown little technical innovation over the past few years. However, HP's Scanjet G4050 has broken the mould with the first so-called six-colour scanner, using two lamps to provide RGB feedback plus extra colour information.Image quality, as we'd expect on a scanner costing over $500, is excellent. Colour handling was accurate in all of our tests, whether we were scanning reflective photographic media or transparent negatives and slides – results were truly of archive quality. Our only complaint is speed: at 300dpi, there are no problems, with a 6 x 4in photo previewing in seven seconds and scanning in 11. However, switching to six-colour scanning (turned off by default) increased time exponentially to nearly one-and-a-half minutes, with no proportional increase in accuracy or image quality.

Hippy chic

But hippy chic is only one element of the island's cultural heritage. "Ibiza has seen a steady influx of visitors to its shores for thousands of years," says Grimshaw. "From the Greeks and the Phoenicians [who founded Ibiza Town] to the Byzantines and Moors, it has always been this rich melting pot."

The island's ability to absorb new influences is still much in evidence. From restored traditional farmhouses (some of which have now been turned into agrotourismo hotels) to colourful Moroccan-themed stone fincas and modernist glass cubes, a dramatic mix of tastes and cultures exist happily side by side.

Perched on a clifftop on a stretch of the coast overlooking the rocky outcrop of Es Verda island in the south-west, Casa Inspiration is one such tribute to contemporary, purist design.
