| Lamp posts removed at causeway accident spot
Two lamp standards near Tourism Victoria's Visitor Centre on Wharf Street have been removed after a teenager was seriously injured when one standard broke as he was spinning from it. The Provincial Capital Commission owns the property where the accident happened. Ray Parkes, commission chief executive officer, said he didn't know if the standards were rusty. “I wouldn't doubt it. It is a metal standard on an oceanfront property, exposed to salt water over time." .
South American summit calls for studies on land for bio-fuels
The just-concluded South American energy summit has called for studies to be done on the availability of land to be used in the production of bio-fuels if land for food is not to be compromised and current national forests are not felled. And Venezuela has agreed to a multi-billion dollar project for the laying of gas pipelines to Brazil, Bolivia and Argentina. This was part of the South American Energy Treaty which Venezuela presented and which is aimed at ensuring energy, oil, gas, and alternative fuels to the region for over 100 years. Speaking with Stabroek News about the outcome of the energy summit held on Margarita Island in Venezuela April 16-17, Prime Minister Sam Hinds said that based on the discussions held, "It would appear that bio-fuel would have limited scope if land for food is not to be compromised and current forests are not felled." He said the conference felt there was need for studies to be conducted to ensure that bio-fuel does not impede the availability of land for food and food crops or involve the cutting down of national forests for cultivation for bio-fuel purposes.

Japan Stocks Gain as Earnings in US, Europe Lift Confidence
April 23 (Bloomberg) -- Japanese stocks gained after profit reports from companies including Caterpillar Inc. and ASML Holding NV raised confidence global economic growth will be sustained and lifted stocks in the U.S. and Europe. Toyota Motor Corp. and Canon Inc. led advances. ``The better-than-expected corporate earnings announcements as a whole gave relief to investors,'' said Soichiro Monji, who helps oversee about $47 billion at Daiwa SB Investments Ltd. in Tokyo. ``The strength in U.S. and European stocks last Friday is causing many investors to rush to the Japanese market because it looks to be a laggard.'' The Nikkei 225 Stock Average added 164.89, or 0.9 percent, to 17,617.51 at the 11 a.m. break in Tokyo. The broader Topix index rose 11.62, or 0.7 percent, to 1721.69.
