Some states say no to teen tanning

WASHINGTON — No smoking. No drinking. No talking on cell phones while driving. Now, the latest no-no in state laws aimed at underage teens is indoor tanning.

Spurred by worries about skin cancer, Utah and Virginia this year joined 25 other states, including Mississippi, in placing limits on teens seeking a bronze glow from the ultraviolet lights of a tanning bed. North Dakota's Legislature is putting the final touches on a measure to also clamp restrictions on tanning salon patrons under age 18.

Most of the laws require underage teens to get parental permission to lie under the tanning-bed heat lamps that emit intense UV light. A handful of states completely ban access to artificial UV light in salons for those younger than 13, 14 or 16. Others require teens to bring along a parent or a doctor's prescription.

Government Splits VRA

The Volta River Authority (VRA) has been split into two entities to pave the way for the active participation of independent power producers (IPPs) in the power sector.

Consequently, the government has incorporated the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCO) and appointed a Chief Executive Officer, Mr Joseph Wiafe, an electrical engineer, to begin the process of setting up a transmission entity separate from the VRA.

The VRA will maintain its function as a power generator.

The Minister of Energy, Mr Joseph Kofi Adda, stated this at a partnership training programme for Ghanaian and American regulatory utility commissioners in Accra yesterday.

The two-day training programme is sponsored by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID.

Apache for kids

You may know Apache as the most popular web server, powering many of the internet's biggest sites. It's the A in LAMP, the gold standard in flexible open source architecture making web 2.0 scale cheaply.

It's also a great way to teach your kids HTML. When my daughter wanted to learn how to build web pages, I found it to be the easiest way to get her up and running with a place to play on her own computer. Just go to the download section of apache.org and grab the latest version of the file labeled Win32 Binary (MSI Installer). It's a very easy install, don't worry about the settings along the way, you can always change them later. (Apologies but these are Windows instructions. Perhaps one of my colleagues can describe the Mac side of things)

When the installer is done, you're up and running.
