EAC reassures public over mercury fears in low energy bulbs

THE ELECTRICITY Authority of Cyprus yesterday reassured people that newer, energy-efficient light bulbs, which contain tiny amounts of mercury, pose no danger to the public. Mercury is poisonous, but its also a necessary part of most compact fluorescent lightbulbs (CFL) the kind that environmentalists and some governments are pushing as a way to cut energy use. Mercury is probably best known for its effects on the nervous system. In the classic childrens book Alice in Wonderland, the character of the Mad Hatter was based on a 19th century anecdote that hat makers who were continually exposed to the toxin went a little crazy. Mercury can also damage the kidneys and liver and, in sufficient quantities, can cause death. Manufacturers and environmentalists note that because CFLs require less electricity than traditional incandescent bulbs, they reduce overall carbon in the atmosphere by cutting emissions from coal-fired power plants.

After lamps, Ombudsman probes P90-M traffic equipment

Overpriced street lamps may not be the only controversial expenses in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) summit in Cebu last January. After finding basis to charge 19 officials for the lamppost mess, the Ombudsman is setting its sights on alleged anomalies in traffic surveillance equipment. Sun-Star Cebu (www.sunstar.com.ph) reported Sunday that the Ombudsman is now looking into alleged anomalies in the procurement of some P90 million worth of traffic surveillance equipment, the installation of lamps in a private beach resort and the expenses incurred by the Lapu-Lapu city government. It is also looking into possible anomalies in the P155 million used in asphalting 15 short Cebu City road segments. Earlier, the Ombudsman asked for the immediate preventive suspension of all the public officials involved in the lamps mess.

Demolition by truck

ESSEN: A runaway truck had demolished six cars, street lamps and traffic signals before crashing into a house in the German city of Essen, police said yesterday.

The driver had parked and locked the 40-ton vehicle at the side of the road and was at home when it suddenly moved off down the sloping street at 10pm on Wednesday.

Four Exhibitions Display Artistic Versatility Of Glass

The Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery is celebrating the second element of its name with a quartet of exhibitions devoted to glass. The featured exhibitions introduce new work by Chris Dorosz, Jacqueline Berting and Miyuki Shinkai. Also on view is a Coles Notes type survey of 3,500 years of functional glassware and decorative techniques. The exhibitions continue through June 3. PAINTED ROOM Dorosz's Painted Room is a three-dimensional installation that combines elements of painting and sculpture. Nylon fishing lines are suspended from a grid panel which, in turn, is suspended from the ceiling. Attached to the lines are hardened multi-coloured gobs of oil paint resembling asymmetrical glass beads. The gobs are placed so that they create the shape-- or illusion of shape -- of furniture in a room.
