All Cayennes should look this good: Top Car Vantage GT

The first-generation Porsche Cayenne was not the most stirring thing to look at. The facelifted 2008 edition fares slightly better (particularly the Turbo), but it's still no beauty. Aftermarketers have also met difficulty when dealing with the Cayenne's looks. For example, TechArt's Magnum is certainly a performance monster, but it still wears a love-it-or-hate-it mug. We were stating to believe that a truly hot-looking Cayenne was simply not achievable at the hands of humans, when Greg from Cardesign.ru sent in word of the Top Car Vantage GT. Top Car is a Russian aftermarket outfit, and from the looks of things, it has its stuff in order. The Cayenne-derived Vantage GT is both a looker and a performer, and we'll say this: it's one of the best looking Cayennes we've seen -- factory or tuner-built -- period.

The smoking lamp is lit

The Ohio Veterans of Foreign Wars won the right to light up in their posts re cently, but that doesn't mean that they should start blowing smoke.

Bill Seagraves, the VFW's state commander, seems to agree. He said he would urge the VFW's 428 posts to establish smoking and nonsmoking spaces inside.

The Ohio Department of Health made an understandable call when it decided to exempt nonprofit private clubs from the ban, as long as everyone present is a member, including employees. Anti-smoking advocates aren't pleased, and we can understand their disapproval. Ohioans voted overwhelmingly in November to outlaw smoking in public spaces.

But the VFW is not a public place when it serves as a meeting hall for members only. And when it does have a public event or has youngsters 18 or under present, the new rules say cigarettes and cigars must go out, said health officials.

Philips exits TSMC, profits set to jump

Royal Philips Electronics NV, the world's biggest maker of electric shavers and light bulbs, may say first-quarter profit jumped more than fivefold on the sale of part of its stake in Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.

Net income probably climbed to 832.3 million euros (US$1.12 billion) from 160 million euros a year earlier, the median estimate of 10 analysts Bloomberg News surveyed by telephone and e-mail. Sales may have fallen 0.2 percent to 6.15 billion euros.

Philips Chief Executive Officer Gerard Kleisterlee last year sold most of the chip unit and part of its stake in Taiwan Semiconductor to focus on appliances, medical scanners and lamps. Amsterdam-based Philips forecast a "challenging" first quarter for its consumer electronics unit, the largest division by revenue, as prices of flat-panel televisions decline.

Lights out in Ontario on old-style bulbs

As part of a five-point energy conservation program announced yesterday, the energy and environment ministers said stores will only be allowed to sell compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs) by 2012.

"It's lights out for old, inefficient bulbs in Ontario," Energy Minister Dwight Duncan told reporters at the spring Home Show at Exhibition Place.

"By making this one small change, we can make an enormous difference in the way we use electricity," he said, adding Ontario is the first province in Canada to launch the initiative.

Duncan said the old bulbs use "four times the power." Replacing 87 million cheaper incandescent bulbs now used in Ontario homes will save 6 million megawatt hours a year -- enough to power 600,000 homes, officials said. Government offices are installing CFLs as part of a commitment to reducing energy costs and green house gases, although some facilities such as hospitals will be allowed to continue using the old bulbs "for insurance purposes," Duncan said.
