Shop and ski by the sea at Christmas?

A DRY ski slope in the heart of Weston could soon be the Christmas attraction which draws thousands of shoppers to the town centre over the festive season.Plans are taking shape to make the town one of the most unique places to experience Christmas in the region, with a ski slope on the Town Square off the High Street heading the list of attractions.Eventually, the Weston Town Centre Partnership, which is behind the project, would like to see the slope complemented by an ice-rink on Big Lamp Corner and possibly even a toboggan run during the Christmas season. The partnership is keen to make Weston stand out during the profitable run-up to Christmas and attract people into the town who might normally shop in other towns and cities in the South West. Its aims for this year include installing Christmas lights in Dolphin Square, St James Street and Big Lamp Corner, creating a grotto and children's show, holding themed evenings, introducing a Christmas lights scheme in the Orchard Meadows shopping area and holding a 'best dressed window' competition.Next year it hopes to bring in a dry ski slope for the Town Square and create a 'Winter Wonderland' with children's rides and a grotto.

North Side Review: Five Star Bar & Grill

"This place feels like Northside," we remarked to our dining companion as we sat down at the Five Star Bar & Grill on 1424 W. Chicago Ave. Despite the rock-and-roll-inspired decor (which was strangely matched with the weapons-inspired overhead lamps), we felt like we could have been dining on N. Damen — same frat-boy atmosphere, same mediocre selection of standard bar fare, and same feeling as we left of "did we really just spend $30 on sandwiches and a couple of beers for two?"

The menu at Five Star is pretty standard for a bar and grill — burgers with multiple variations (guacamole, bacon, grilled onions, etc.) and a selection of sandwiches. We tried the Sid & Nancy, a hefty sandwich of smoked turkey, muenster cheese and honey mustard on egg bread. We didn't have any real complaints about this sandwich, but then again, how hard is it to make a turkey and cheese sammie? The pulled pork sandwich featured pork with more of a barbecue sauce flavor than the traditional vinegar.

Carousel in Concert, Lamplighters Tour Bay Area

The Bay Area's acclaimed Lamplighters Music Theatre presents Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II's sweeping musical CAROUSEL in concert as part of the Gas Lamp Spring Operetta Series.

Featuring Lamplighters' unparalleled orchestra and a cast of 40 highlighting the phenomenal voices of the Lamplighters company, this sumptuous work from the Golden Era of Broadway includes such hallmark songs as "If I Loved You," "My Boy Bill," "You'll Never Walk Alone," and the gorgeous "Carousel Waltz." Dennis Lickteig directs this semi-staged, costumed production with Lamplighters Musical Director Baker Peeples at the baton.

"Set in a small New England seaside town, CAROUSEL follows the love story of Billy Bigelow, a smooth-talking carnival barker, and Julie Jordan, a spunky local factory worker he seduces," states press notes, "Desperate for money after learning that he and Julie will be parents, Billy attempts a foolish robbery.
