| One-time gain lifts net at Philips
AMSTERDAM: Philips Electronics, the largest European maker of consumer electronics, said Monday that first-quarter profit jumped because of a one-time gain and increased sales of electric shavers and energy-efficient lamps. Net income rose to €875 million, or $1.19 billion, from €160 million a year earlier, Philips said in a statement. Profit beat analysts' estimates, prompting the biggest share gain in eight months. Sales fell 2.8 percent to €5.99 billion. Gerard Kleisterlee, the chief executive, cut Philips' stake in Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing, generating a gain of €697 million in the quarter, as part of a shift away from chip assets to focus on units that make medical equipment, appliances and lamps. Philips cut its stake in Taiwan Semiconductor to 12.8 percent from 16.2 percent and said last month that it planned to sell its entire stake by 2010.
Anaheim knocks out Minnesota to move to semifinals
Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) - Jean-Sebastein Giguere, in his first start of the postseason, stopped 26 shots as Anaheim sent Minnesota packing with a 4-1 win in Game 5 of their Western Conference quarterfinal at Honda Center. "I felt surprisingly good. I was hungry," Giguere said. "It's been an emotional couple of weeks, and once that was behind me I could focus on the game." Giguere had not started in net since leaving the team on March 31 due to health issues with his son. Chris Pronger had a goal and an assist for the Ducks, who move on to the Western Conference semifinals for the second consecutive season and for the fourth time in franchise history. Ryan Getzlaf, Corey Perry, and Travis Moen also lit the lamp, while Scott Niedermayer and Samuel Pahlsson picked up two assists apiece.
Canby Home Explosion Rattles Neighborhood
CANBY, Ore. - A Canby home was blown to pieces Thursday afternoon after a gas leak caused an explosion and a two-alarm fire. It happened at 11:30 a.m. on Sycamore Street. A utility crew worker was using a backhoe when he first smelled natural gas and reported it to authorities. NW Natural Gas responded and evacuated the homeowners. Four firefighters were checking the leak and ventilating the home when it suddenly exploded. The blast shattered windows and blew the doors off of the house. The garage door was found across the street. Though neighbors say they heard the blast from a mile away, 11-year-old Taylor Lee was right next door. She was home sick from school when she says she heard the explosion from inside her house. She says lamps in her home started to shake and pictures on the walls fell to the ground.
PureSpectrum, Inc. Will Develop T-8 Fluorescent Prototype
SAVANNAH, Ga., April 12 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- PureSpectrum, Inc. (Pink Sheets: PSPM) will develop a ballast prototype for a four-tube, four- foot T-8 lamp, which will create additional markets for PureSpectrum Technology by ensuring that the proprietary circuitry design is viable for all major categories of fluorescent and High Intensity Discharge lighting. Lighting systems are responsible for approximately 35 percent of the electricity costs in a typical commercial building and 10 percent in industrial settings. In an effort to reduce lighting energy costs, T-8 fluorescent lamps with electronic ballasts have quickly become the standard for new fixtures and retrofits in commercial office buildings, schools, and a substantial portion of industrial lighting. PureSpectrum Technology's patented circuitry design to improve electronic ballasts has already been successfully applied to ballast prototypes for T-4 fluorescent lamps as well as Compact Fluorescent Lighting and High Intensity Discharge bulbs.
